Lost stories of Uhl Pottery.
Maybe this should be nearly lost stories. On Occasion I hear a stroy worth sharing, I believe its true but of course there is no verification. So anyway, here we go,
Many years ago, when the Uhl Collector Society met at the Holiday Inn at Jasper most sales were made during room to room browsing. People would set up in their room and buyers would do walk throughs. Not only were sales made, but relationships were built and stories were told.
One year an elderly lady entered the room of well known collector/picker. She looked at hand painted miniatures on his table and remarked "I used to paint these." Our seller asked to hear about it.
The story goes that when she was a high school senior her art teacher approached here and asked if she was interested in a part time job in painting pottery. Well, the student was from a poor family and a part time job sounded great. For the rest of the year she and another girl painted pottery. The put smiles on the faces of pigs, flowers on little jugs, eyes on donkeys and much more. She described it as a great job, They had artistic freedom to choose the decoration, but Uhl would set out the pottery to be painted.
As collectors today we see the fruits of their labor quite often. A piggy bank with hand painted details is more desired than one with out the details.
